EU Council conclusions on the Afghanistan Peace Process
BRUSSELS - The EU Council gathered on April 8 , adopted conclusions on the Afghanistan Peace Process, reaffirming its political commitment and long-term support to the people of Afghanistan on their path towards peace, security and prosperity.
While recommending direct negotiations between Afghans, with the Government of Afghanistan and the Taliban at their core begin as soon as possible, it confirms the EU's readiness to support the peace process and its implementation.
The EU stands ready to support the Peace Process as guarantor of peace. Promoting inclusiveness, assisting with reforms and the reintegration of fighters and their families. The EU’s contribution will also come as promoter of regional trade and connectivity.
The EU reiterates the importance of the meaningful participation of women in all peace initiatives, including formal and informal peace negotiations, as well as inclusive, credible and transparent elections in 2019, which are an essential element for a strengthened democracy and stability in Afghanistan.
